States Sue Trump Administration Over Student Loan Limits

A coalition of 24 states and Washington DC are suing the Trump administration over student loan limits on nursing and healthcare degrees.

A lawsuit was filed in federal court Tuesday challenging a rule that limits access to federal student loans for those seeking a graduate degree in several healthcare fields.

“For years, the federal student loan program has expanded access to higher education for the next generation of skilled professionals, creating more opportunities for individuals to earn degrees in essential fields,” said Massachusetts Attorney General Campbell. “The Trump Administration’s attempt to re-write the rules governing this program and unlawfully exclude certain professional degrees threatens the wellbeing of our communities and would exacerbate labor shortages in critical industries like healthcare. I’ll continue to hold this Administration accountable when they attempt to exceed their authority and take actions that harm our residents.”

“We need more nurses, therapists and social workers, and our federal government should be supporting their studies, not defunding them. The Trump/McMahon plan to magically drive down education costs by barring student loans defies Congress, defies the law, defies reality, and will do real damage to Connecticut students and workers. We are suing to restore common sense and to force Trump and McMahon to follow the law,” said Connecticut Attorney General WilliamTong.

Rhode Island is also part of the suit.

The Attorneys General say healthcare systems across the U.S. are already understaffed, and that the administration is making it harder to pursue those degrees.
