Amherst Fire Officials Issue Warning About Lithium Batteries

Investigators believe an apartment fire in Amherst last weekend was caused by lithium batteries.

Authorities say an e-bike containing lithium batteries caught fire on the porch of a unit at the Olympia Place apartments on Saturday, causing heavy damage and displacing six people.

Fire officials are warning the public not to store lithium batteries outside nor in hallways or stairwells.

Used lithium batteries should be properly disposed of at designated collection points.
