Dozens of Massachusetts beaches were closed over the weekend because of elevated levels of bacteria in the water.
The Department of Public Health reports that at one point yesterday, 62 beaches and swimming areas were closed.
By last night, that number had dipped below 50.
The closures came as temperatures were hot over the weekend, and residents were seeking out places to swim and beat the heat.
The water is tested frequently at public swimming areas, and they are closed when bacteria exceeds safe levels.
