Leverett Board Rejects ICE Cooperation

A town in Franklin County is refusing to assist ICE.

The Leverett Select Board voted unanimously in favor of a policy that states town officials, including police officers, shall not participate in ICE activities.

Board member Tom Hankinson says the policy stems from the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.

Under the act, police officers will still comply with requests from ICE, including detaining people and adding information to the federal database.
