Former Marine Sentenced For False Purple Heart Application

A former Marine has been sentenced in federal court for submitting a false Purple Heart application.

Prosecutors say Paul John Herbert of Shelburne Falls submitted multiple false statements to Veterans Affairs about injuries from an improvised explosive device.

Herbert was sentenced to two years of probation with one of those years to be served as home confinement.

Based on those false claims, prosecutors say Herbert was overpaid more than 300-thousand-dollars in disability compensation.

He also admits to asking a congressman to help with the Purple Heart application based on the false claim he was hurt in a roadside explosion.
