Not a happy subject for some, but it appears the Massachusetts Legislature will debate whether to bring back Happy Hour pricing in bars in an effort to promote business.
The last time there was a Happy Hour in Massachusetts it was back in 1984. Lawmakers disbanded the practice in an effort to keep the roads safe from drunk drivers.
But, decades later, state lawmakers, led by State Senator Julian Cyr appear ready to try to bring back the practice.
Under the Senator's proposal, cities and towns throughout the state could bring back Happy Hours if they wished.
It is not the first time the measure has come up.
In 2023 the Cyr bill was referred to committee.
It received a hearing in that year, but no up or down vote.
In February of 2024, a joint hearing by House and Senate committees was conducted. Again, there was no final vote on the measure.
Some bar owners are against the measure saying it discounted drinks would have an adverse impact.
Mothers Against Drunk Drivers has not taken a stand yet.
So far the bill has not been sent to committee nor has a hearing been set.
