Chicago Public Schools chief executive Pedro Martinez is set to become the next state commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Martinez was recommended for the post yesterday by the state education board.

He was a candidate for the superintendent of Boston in 2015, a position that went to Tommy Chang.

Martinez was fired for his Chicago job but challenged the move legally, and will stay at the Illinois job until June.

The firing was reportedly over issues in dealing with a teachers union.
