The Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts is reinstating a first-degree murder conviction for a deadly shooting in Springfield.

Luis Gomez was initially found guilty of first-degree murder for the death of Jesus Flores in 2018, but the judge in the case dropped the verdict to second-degree murder, claiming there was not enough evidence the shooting was premeditated.

Gomez then appealed the ruling to the Supreme Judicial Court, which not only upheld the verdict but reinstated it to first-degree murder, calling the reduction an "abuse of discretion" by the judge.

Gomez once again faces a life sentence.
