The former owner of the Springfield Gardens apartments is agreeing to a ten-million-dollar settlement.
The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office announced the settlement yesterday with New Jersey based company Schweb Partners LLC, which rented to over 12-hundred tenants in the Springfield area between 2020-and-2024.
The AG's Office said Schweb either delayed or failed to make repairs for unsanitary and unsafe conditions, including mold, pest infestations, and collapsed ceilings.
“Landlords who operate in Massachusetts have a legal obligation to ensure their tenants are living in safe and sanitary housing. When those obligations are violated, it doesn’t just break our laws, it unfairly traumatizes our residents who are often led to live in uninhabitable conditions or be uprooted from their homes,” the Attorney General said.. “I am proud to announce this settlement, which will provide meaningful relief for tenants.”
State officials say Schweb is also prohibited from owning or managing real estate properties in Massachusetts going forward.
