Mike Fisher opened up about the conversation he had with his two young children following the tragic Covenant School shooting earlier this week in Nashville, Tennessee. The former NHL star, who shares his two sons with powerhouse singer-songwriter Carrie Underwood, said the week has been “full of emotions.”

On Monday morning (March 27), a 28-year-old former student of the private Christian school entered the building armed with two AR-style rifles and a handgun, taking took six lives. Officials identified the victims 9-year-old students Evelyn DieckhausHallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, in addition to three adult staff members: substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, 61, headmaster Katherine Koonce, 60, and custodian Mike Hill, 61. Metro Nashville Police Department officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo have been hailed as heroes for their swift response in killing the attacker during the incident. Middle Tennesseans and others have mourned the victims at public vigils and participated in ways to help those affected by the tragedy.

“I can’t even imagine the devastation for the families with kids and staff at covenant and to those who lost beautiful children and loved ones,” Fisher wrote in a caption on Instagram on Thursday night (March 30). “My heart breaks for all of you! I’m so sorry! We are praying for you!”

He also opened up about how he spoke with sons Isaiah, 8, and Jacob, 4, about the tragedy. Fisher added that the boys “have good friends” who attend the school, and shared the family’s faith-based conversation:

“The other night we talked to our boys about what had happened. They have good friends that attend covenant school. Explaining this to children is hard but I think it’s important. Isaiah’s first question was why?? Why would someone do that?? I tried to explain to him that sometimes we will never know why but we have evil in this world and really bad things can happen. We told him that God loves us and that Jesus, his son, is the ONLY answer and hope we have in this broken world. It was a reminder that the most important thing we can do is point them to Jesus and show them what following him looks like because we never know when our time here on earth will be up! I pray this brings us all closer to our savior and that we boldly point people and our loved ones to Jesus because thats what matters most!!”

Fisher closed his post with a Bible verse, John 16:33: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” See his post here:
