Hannah Ellis opened up about a heartfelt word of advice that she once gave her sister to help her get through a breakup, but she knows the emotions her sister endured are universal. That’s why she penned the heartfelt ballad, “Someone Else’s Heartbreak.”

“The day I wrote this song for my little sister, I knew it wasn’t just for her. I had tons of advice to give, but then I remembered when it was my heart that was broken,” Ellis reflected in an Instagram caption on Friday (February 10). “Thanks to [Josh Kerr] & [Emily Falvey] for getting vulnerable and helping me tell this story, and to [Jason Massey] for bringing it to life ❤️💔”

“If this were someone else's heartbreak/ Someone else's lonely/ I’d just tell 'em give it time/ But I can't take my own advice/ When it's my pain/ I swear I'm the only one/ That ever loved somebody like I loved him/ I’d be sure/ That I'd be okay/ If it were/ But it ain’t/ Someone else's heartbreak”

The “Country Can” artist has also said that “we’re all heartbreak specialist’s until it’s our own…” and shared the story behind “Someone Else’s Heartbreak” on her social media channels leading up to the song’s release. While making some coffee earlier this week, she explained:

“My little sister’s boyfriend of two years broke up with her, and she called me one morning to tell me about it. I was walking into my co-write and I wanted to write a song that was kind of like, ‘we hated him anyways,’ but that wasn’t helpful. So, instead, my cowriters and I decided to put ourselves in her shoes because honestly, we’ve all been there before. So, we sat down and we started writing this song called ‘Someone Else’s Heartbreak,’ about how easy it is to tell someone how to get over someone when it isn’t you. And it still kind of makes me tear up sometimes when I sing it, just thinking about her, but also thinking about younger me, and just the things that I wish I could’ve told myself. But it’s hard to hear that advice when you’re on the receiving end of heartache. I guess what I’m trying to say is, sometimes when you wanna fix it, it’s best to just listen.”
