Facebook Suspends Analytics Firm Crimson Hexagon

Facebook confirmed Friday that they had suspended operations with Boston-based analytics firm Crimson Hexagon while they investigate whether the company violated its policies on how data on Facebook and Instagram's users is collected.

The move to suspend the analytics firm comes as Facebook faces questions about how third-party firms uses the data the social media company collects on its users. Last year, Facebook admitted that data firm Cambridge Analytica had improperly accessed their user data and used it to build voter profiles on people across the United States.

The Wall Street Journal reports that one of the data firm's clients is a Russian nonprofit that has ties to the Kremlin.

"We don't allow developers to build surveillance tools using information from Facebook or Instagram," said Ime Archibong, Facebook's vice president of product partnerships. "We take these allegations seriously, and we have suspended these apps while we investigate."

Crimson Hexagon is only allowed to pull publicly-available data from Facebook and Twitter, but the WSJ reports that the firm may have mistakenly received private data from Instagram according to people familiar with the matter.

The social media giant says Crimson Hexagon is cooperating with them and so far its investigation had no uncovered any improper use of Facebook or Instagram's data.

The website for Crimson Hexagon claims the company has access to more than 1 trillion consumer conversations collected from social media, forums, blogs, and reviews.
