Officer Sean Gannon is being laid to rest today. Just 32 years old murdered in the line of duty. It wasn't through the news that I heard, but Facebook posts from fellow Westfield State Class of 2007 friends.
I'm not going to say I knew Sean well, but if you went to Westfield and lived on campus you were familiar with most everyone. Sean was very good friends with some of my favorites from my time at Westfield & we worked together. However we ran in similar, but different circles.
Police Officers are people that are willing to serve. They put their lives on the line everyday and should be treated with respect. Yes there can be a few bad seeds or those that make wrong choices in a tough moment. However the majority have chosen a life of service because they want to help people in a way many of us are unwilling to do.
What I know about Sean is that he was funny and kind. Genuinely a great person and always willing to help. All I've been able to think about today is what Sean leaves behind. My heart breaks today for his friends, his fellow police persons, his wife, his family.
If you are looking to do something in memory of Sean today here is his obituary - there's info where you can make a donation to the Yarmouth Police Foundation or the Cape Cod Foundation - you can also leave a message of condolence to his family.
