Kelly Clarkson Reveals Her Father 'Passed Away Months Ago'

Anyone who knows Kelly Clarkson's catalog understands how important songs like "Because of You" and "Piece by Piece" are to her emotional connection with her father. In a new interview with Forbes, The Voice coach spoke about why she has already choked up a few times singing the latter on her new tour, revealing that her father passed away a few months ago.

During talk about her "Meaning of Life Tour," which recently saw her perform a stellar cover of Lady Gaga's "Shallow," the soon-to-be TV host said that she knows she's going to get emotional every time the track is coming up in the set list. "Just that song for me, personally, behind the scenes, it's evolved mostly for me," she explained. "So like from the moment I wrote it, just being pregnant with my little girl and then you know all the moments that I really did try and make it work with my father and life and just get completely let down to where... You know he passed away months ago. So that's that's why."

Clarkson said that she hasn't publicized that explanation too much but the recent performances of "Piece by Piece" were specifically impacted by his loss. "That's why everybody thinks I'm just a nutcase, but it's just, it's evolved," she added.

"I think it's always when I get to that last part of the song that it really does [get emotional]. Yeah, it sucks to sing but I mean eventually it will be fine," she said, comparing it to 'Because of You.' "It's just the sense of loss that I just don't know if I'll ever not feel just because I'm a mom, I'm a mom of two kids that aren't even from my womb that I still couldn't imagine treating the way that I was. I think that was just a really hard one for me still. But I have to sing it and I get it."
