ATHENS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Athens County Sheriff will drop an appeal of his suspension, while he fights charges of theft in office and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.

There were many calls for Sheriff Pat Kelly to step down, after he was indicted on the charges. Now that Kelly will no longer fight the suspension, the Athens County Commissioners will start to meet Thursday to find a replacement in the interim.

The commissioners indicate the candidates are a retired Sheriff's Lieutenant and a current Sheriff's detective.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine was among those asking for Kelly to step down. Kelly is facing 23 counts related to selling county property without proper authorization.

The Ohio Supreme Court had appointed a panel to consider the matter.
